Love me some coffee

Obviously. Seriously if you know me, then you know I drink coffee like it was going out of style. I tried to give it up a month ago but failed. I did cut back to a cup and half a day from…well lets just say more than a cup and a half. My regular cuppa joe (thanks to my wife who prepped the coffee maker last night) got me thinking this morning: What moves me? Or what move us? Coffee might give me the jump start to the day but it doesn’t move me. Is it the mundane? Are we moving simply to keep moving? Many days I have awoken, worked, talked, shared, laughed, loved, played, and gone to bed all without wondering what moved me though the day. Do the seconds become minutes which become hours which become our lives? What moves us through space and time as Christians?

Romans 8:5 says, ‘Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.’

What moves us? The flesh? The Spirit?

These two natures exist in us but one is who we are and one is who are not. We are not the flesh. We are not our sin. God did not create us to be moved by hurting others, lying, deception, judgment or any of the other fleshly actions. God created us to be moved by The Spirit. Yet Paul tells us in Romans that it does not happen automatically. Our sinful nature or flesh is the mindless default of our daily movement. Living according to the Spirit is a setting of the mind or mind-set on the Spirit’s desires.

So tomorrow when you grab your morning coffee or Diet Coke – before you start moving – take a moment to set your mind on the desires of The Spirit…see what happens
