Where are you living?

Where are you living? Not your physical location but your spiritual/mental location. I have heard many times (even from my own lips) – words of defeat. ‘I can’t do this. I’m too tired. I’m too busy. There isn’t time. I am not good enough. I don’t have the skills, knowledge, wherewithal, etc.’ Ever been there? Still living there now?

Last Saturday I talked with some students about the x’s and y’s of life. For every ‘x’ there is a corresponding ‘y’. For every decision we make (x) – there is a corresponding result (y). ‘Oh, that’s obvious‘ you say. But we hardly live as though it is. Take the example above – words of defeat. When we agree with (x) the lies of the devil and agree that we have nothing to offer, that we are worthless, that we are lost…what is the result (y)? If you see yourself as hopelessly forever caught in a sin, a bad habit, a negative pattern (x)…what is the result (y)? The sin, behavior, habit, pattern will continue and probably increase of course! Should we ‘fake it till we make it’?

Not at all. We must take responsibility for our sin, ask for forgiveness, and lay it aside. In fact we have to make this our pattern for living. Over and over and over – we must count ourselves dead to sin and alive in Christ. Philippians 2:12-13 says ‘Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.’ You are created for God’s pleasure! It takes work – hard work – for us to daily defeat the sinful nature. Let us remember that God’s desire is for us to live in the victory of Christ not the defeat of sin. Let us remember that we have been made to do good not continue in our sin. Let us remember daily, often, and consistently.
