The Holy Spirit pt.3 (aka – Let’s get this party started)

What is the true role of the Holy Spirit in our lives? We are talking about the presence of the creator-God, now dwelling within us. This can only mean one thing – God is going to mess us up from the inside-out.
1. First the Holy Spirit calls us to repentance which we might call – guilt and change (John 16:7-11)
2. I hate lists and I am making one
3. The Holy Spirit creates something sacred in each of us as the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We might say the Spirit is in our hearts but it is beyond the Sunday school idea. This idea of your body being the temple suggests that our whole selves are holy and belonging to God.
4. The Spirit gives gifts to each of us. Everything from patience to speaking in tongues. (Galatians 5:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12-13)
5. The work of the Holy Spirit is the work of God in our lives. He will guide us in truth, comfort, convict, move, show, reveal, and is only limited by His powers as God (note the sarcasm in the last one).

We are created in God’s image and the Holy Spirit is restoring that within us. It isn’t a move toward deification but rather a renewal of who we are uniquely as humanity. God intends for us to live fully in His presence and fully in His service. Getting there is messy. Once we start to ask God to move us and move in us – then we are toast. God will mess up our lives in the most beautiful way possible.

We can’t contain or quantify or explain away the work of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately I think we have tried to do just that. Miracles, prophecies, love and great joy have been replaced with hard work, formulas, service events and medication. We can ignore the Spirit, make ourselves closed off, and deaden the Spirit’s work through our disobedience – but we have been doing that for generations. Let’s try something new.

Let’s start right now with a simple prayer – ‘Come Holy Spirit’…and get ready for the ride of your life!
